Lenition in Modern Borelian

Despite the loss of tones in Modern Borelian, lenition still helps it retain its original, more melodic qualities.  Lenition helps to avoid awkward consonant clusters when words run into each other.  It is believed that this modern lenition has to do with grammatical genders that are also no longer in use at large.

The following chart is arranged based on the letters that cause the more lenition, to the ones that cause the least lenition.  Not all letters cause lenition, and some have some rules, which we will cover.

Again, the consonants are:

B C/K D N R T TH L W X J Z M S V

And the vowels are:

A E I O U

R Words

  • When L or J comes before an R-word

    • R changes to I if the next vowel in the word is A, I, or E

    • R changes to E if the next vowel is O or U

  • When T comes before an R-word

    • R changes to A if the next vowel is I, O, or U

    • R changes to O if the next vowel is A or U

    • R changes to U if the next vowel is I or E.

The exact reasoning behind this is unknown and is attributed to the relaxing of rules and archaic noun genders. Therefore, overlapping rules may be considered speaker's choice.

There is no double-lenition.  Any time two of the same consonant butt up against each other, whether in the middle of a word or at the end/beginning of two words, they are to be pronounced separately (as in Italian [casa vs. cassa]).

Lenition can also occur in the middle of words, though it is primarily only in proper nouns, such as Ujerozikowixol.

Knowing the rules of lenition can make it easier to navigate a Borelian dictionary.  For example, Ul Ik Zol is "ul" as normal, "ik" as normal, but "X" turns into "z" to turn "xol" into "zol."
